It was established by the Government of Uttarakhand in November 2015 with the objective of promoting handloom as a means of livelihood for women living in remote rural mountain areas of Uttarakhand.
The Society has its headquarters at Matena, PO. Dinapani, Almora comprising of 1.5 acres of land ans a building of approximately 6000 sq. ft. The building currently comprises of two sections. The first section is dedicated to showcasing the culture and heritage of the district through a photo gallery and textile display and it also has a retail outlet for handmade products like Pashmina, Merino, Mettle, lambs wool, alpaca and sheep wool shawls, stoles fabric, carpets, rugs, table linen and accessories. It also has a small canteen serving local dishes to tourists and visitors.
The second section is where 80 women weavers, on job work basis, work at production centre at Patal Devi. The above centre also imparts training to women in basic skills related to handlooms from time to time.
The objective of the centre is to provide backward and forward linkages by way of raw material, skill upgradation, design intervention and product development & marketing to groups of traditional weaver communities in the remote areas of Almora, Uttarakashi, Rudraprayag, Chamoli and Pithoragarh districts as well, and thus create a vibrant community of weaving entrepreneurs across the state.
The centre also supports livelihoods of unskilled local women by teaching them simple skills like spinning and processing of locally available natural fibers like nettle and bhimel which they would then sell to the Nanda Devi centre and earn a livelihood.
The centre also exchanges traditional knowledge related to hand looms with skilled artisans from other areas of the Himalayas such as Bhutan, Nepal, Kashmir, Laddakh, Himachal and the North Eastern Himalayan States, thus creating a rich repository of weaves and patterns and providing an opportunity for Uttarakhand artisans to expand their knowledge and vision. Presently the centre is being run by Hans Foundation.
